Niezwyk³y rozwój prze¿y³ pod koniec lat 50. wraz z pojawieniem siê ska, a tak¿e od momentu uzyskania przez Jamajkê niepodleg³oœci w 1962. Stanowi najbardziej charakterystyczny gatunek muzyki jamajskiej. Jej historia siêga ponad 400 lat wstecz do wczesnych czasów afrykañskiego niewolnictwa.
